ATN THOR-HD 384 1.25-5x19 Thermal Rifle Scope description

From Night Vision Guys about ATN ThOR HD 384 1.25-5x19 Thermal Rifle Scope TIWSTH381A

In 2016 ATN took yet another novel approach to thermal scopes.  Using some of the technology developed for the X-Sight scope and BinoX binoculars in 2014 and 2015, they redesigned the entire ThOR line to be based on Obsidian "T" II Thermal cores instead of the FLIR cores used previously.  Results seem to be impressive.  The new ATN ThOR HD thermal rifle scopes pack a ton of modern technologically advanced features.  How well these new cores will hold up compared to the proven FLIR cores used in the past remains to be seen, but the 3 year body / 10 year core warranty ATN offers puts our concerns to rest.

Overall being able to purchase a thermal scope with so many features for less than $2000 seems so amazing to us that we have to agree that ATN is on the right path.  This new line of ATN thermal rifle scopes is bound to be super popular. ThOR 384 1.25-5x is ideal for close range hunting.  If your typical range is under 200 yards, then at the moment the ATN Thor thermal scope is the best value in thermal technology.

Some key features of the ThOR HD Series:

  • Smart Range Finder
  • Recoil Activated Video (RAV)
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • Gyroscope
  • Magnetometer
  • Accelerometer
  • E-Barometer
  • Smooth Zoom
  • Profile Manager
  • E-Compass

Thermal Imaging

Please note that most thermal devices are built per order.  It may take 3-5 days or more for your order to ship.  If timely shipping is important to you, please, contact us to verify availability prior to ordering.

Thermal devices can produce various types of images.  Some are color others are monochrome.  In either case change in shade or color indicates temperature differences.

color thermal image thermal bw image

Here is how thermal imaging devices work...

A special lens focuses the infrared light emitted by all of the objects in view.

The focused light is scanned by a phased array of infrared-detector elements. The detector elements create a very detailed temperature pattern called a thermogram. It only takes about one-thirtieth of a second for the detector array to obtain the temperature information to make the thermogram. This information is obtained from several thousand points in the field of view of the detector array.

The thermogram created by the detector elements is translated into electric impulses.

The impulses are sent to a signal-processing unit, a circuit board with a dedicated chip that translates the information from the elements into data for the display.

The signal-processing unit sends the information to the display, where it appears as various colors depending on the intensity of the infrared emission. The combination of all the impulses from all of the elements creates the image.

There are a few key Manufacturers when it comes to thermal imaging.

ATN: produce such well knows devies as ThOR-HD thermal scope, BINOX-THD thermal binoculars, and OTS-HD thermal monocular.

FLIR/Armasight: the largest maker of consumer level thermal products is well knows for their full product line.  Zeus thermal scopes, Q14 and Scout monoculars, Helios and Scout binoculars and many more.

Pulsar: a very popular brand for digital night vision and thermal imaging.  Key products include Pulsar Trail and Apex thermal scopes and Pulsar Helion and Quantum thermal monoculars.

Seek: mobile device mounted thermal cameras are the main products of this brand.

Delivery Time and Manufacturing Process for ATN THOR-HD 384 1.25-5x19 Thermal Rifle Scope:

Most of our manufacturers do not keep products like ATN THOR-HD 384 1.25-5x19 Thermal Rifle Scope assembled on the shelf. Night Vision tubes are kept separate from the body of the unit. When the order is placed, the manufacturer starts the order processing and assembly process which includes the following:

  • Order processing - we collect all the necessary information including address and phone numbers. We also make sure that our customer ordered the correct product for their needs and that the product can be exported by US law to the country of destination. In some cases a signed export compliance form is required.
  • QC - in this step the manufacturer will inspect all individual parts which will be used to assemble the night vision device for any defects.
  • Production & Assembly - during production, all the parts are put together. Night Vision tubes in inserted into the body of the unit and all the complex electronics for the device are connected. This process takes place in a special lab called the "clean room" as even a small speckle of dust can cause undesired optical effect.
  • QA - one the night vision device is assembled, it goes through a rigorous testing process to make sure it meets all the expected specifications and all parts function as expected. For this most manufacturers have a special "dark room" designed to allow testing of the units without causing incidental damage to the night vision tube by exposure to bright light.
  • Packaging - this is a key process as well. In most case your night vision device will be shipped to you directly from the manufacturer but sometimes needs to be sent to us first. In either case items need to be packaged securely to avoid any kind of damage during transportation.
  • Shipping - as described above items will most of the time ship from the manufacturer. For most domestic orders (unless shipping to POB or AFB) a premium shipper like FedEx or UPS will be used.

Only by following the above steps can we along with our manufacturers bring you - our customer - night vision products of highest quality, However as you can understand the above process can take several days to complete. For example if your device fails QA, the entire process restarts. Also at QC stage a manufacturer may realize that the tube they have in stock has a defect and a replacement tube needs to be ordered. Due to the complexity of this process, it is prudent to expect 3-4 business days for production and handling of the purchased device. Keep in mind that this process is designed to guarantee your satisfaction with the night vision device of your choice.  It occasionally possible to expedite the process for urgent orders but addional fees or other restrictions may apply.

Questions on ATN THOR-HD 384 1.25-5x19 Thermal Rifle Scope

From on

Q: Yardage?

A: Hi Todd. Yardage is not such a simple question. When it comes to thermals there are distances for detection as well as for recognition. Both of these can change depending on the size of the target and its temperature contrast with the surrounding environment. So, all I can do is give you an estimate based on what ATN provides: HUMAN DETECTION RANGE 625 m, HUMAN RECOGNITION RANGE 280 m, HUMAN IDENTIFICATION RANGE 170 m.

From on

Q: What is the frame rate?60hz?

A: Hi James. Currently ATN THOR HD thermal scopes are being announced as 30hz. Please let us know if you would like to discuss pros and cons with one of our product experts.

From on

Q: Under spec 4aa batteries are called for. But when you go to purchase it recommends cr123s. Which is correct?

A: Hi James. You are correct and thank you for pointing this out. The new THOR line uses AA batteries and is not compatible with CR123A. We will fix the website. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

From on

Q: What temperatures will this operate in? Will it function in below zero temps? Thanks

A: Hi John. Below zero F or C? In the meantime we will check with ATN on the exact operating temperature range.

From on

Q: will it function below zero Fahrenheit? Thanks. John

A: Hi John. We believe it will be about the same as it was for the old Thor thermal riflescopes: -30C to +60C. However, we are checking with ATN to verify as this information has not been provided to us.

From on

Q: Can this be mounted to a helmet or strictly weapon mount ?

A: Hi Joel. ATN ThOR is a thermal riflescope. There are thermal monoculars which we can offer if you are looking for a head mount solution. Please provide us with some more details on what you are trying to achieve.

From on

Q: What is the field of view at 100 yards? How does that compare to the 25 mm and 50 mm models?

A: ATN ThOR HD 19mm lens angle of view is around 16 x 12.5. For the 50mm lens it is 6 x 4.7 because magnification is greater.

From on

Q: Is this really works 8 hours with 4AA batteries?

A: Hi Jack. We have not tested it ourselves on subject of battery consumption. However, it probably depends on how many of the features of the scope you are using and how you are using it. If you keep it in standby mode or turned on all the time for example.

From on

Q: Whats the pre-order mean? When will it ship? Thank you

A: Hi Seth. ATN THoR HD 384 1.25 is currently on backorder. We are expecting a shipment from ATN, but due to high demand and slow production we are not sure when they will send us the shipment. If you are not set on this particular unit, we can offer similar products which will ship quickly and cost less or offer you a special deal on this unit to make it worth while the wait. Let us know which you prefer.

From on

Q: Is this scope the one that I need to shoot coyotes? Tell me if this scope is suited for the following variables: 1. Maximum shot range is 100 yards or less. 2. Rifle, Daniels Defense Ambush .300 Blackout with AAC Cyclone Supressor. 3. Ammunition, 220 grain Sierra Matchkings loaded subsonic at approximately 1050 feet per second. 4. Land features, cut grass flat, 8 mature trees with limbs cut for cabbed Kubota tractor to cut underneath. Adjacent land is wooded & that's where the coyotes sneak in from to kill & eat out pets. Is the ATN Thor HD $1800.00 Thermal sufficient for my needs or do you recommend another scope? Thanks

A: Hi William. ATN THOR-HD 384 1.25X thermal scope will do well for your purposes. There are a couple of other scopes we can suggest which will do just as well and cost about the same also. The only issue with the ATN scope is that there is a delay in deliveries while some other scopes we can have shipped right away. Please let us know if you need this scope right away and we can tell you which model you should consider in that case.

From on

Q: In your opinion, would you be able to ha e coyote detection at 600m and be able to have enough magnification to kill them at 300m?

A: Hi Jordan, For such distances I would suggest a more powerful thermal scope. Are these the actual ranges you are looking to target? Do you need us to suggest some thermal scopes capable of these distances?

From on

Q: When will the ATM thermal scope be back in stock? Amd will this be good for a 250 yard shot scope. For coyotes or hogs.

A: Hi Richard. This particular THOR thermal scope is in stock at the moment. However, as far as the distance is concerned, you need at least 3x optical for that range. We suggest Armasight Zeus 3-12x or Thor 4.5x. Please respond if you would like us to send you the links to the products or if you would like us to call you to discuss.

From on

Q: Can this unit be used as a clip on?

A: hi Mike. ATN THOr-HD is a dedicated thermal scope and cannot be used as a clipon.

From on

Q: What other scopes do you recommend instead of the ATN Thor HD 384 1,25? What do you have comparable in clip ons?

A: Hi Mike. We would need to understand your specific needs to give you a suggestion on the units. We need to know the following: your rifles, types of game hunted, and distances. With this info in hand we can make some suggestions. Also if you are interested in clipons, we need to know what magnification day scopes you will be using. There are very few models which can be used as a dedicated scope as well as a clipon. IR defense has some. Most manufacturers make scopes and make clipons.

From on

Q: What are the other scopes that work just as well and at the same price?

A: Hi Tait. There is not anything in the same price range. The rest of the scopes start at about $500-$1000 more. In that price range you would be looking at Armasight Predators, Pulsar Trail XQ30 and other such scopes.

From on

Q: I am going to be hunting everything from coyote in the thick woods of Maine to boar in open fields in Texas, I would like to know if this is the scope I need and what the pros and cons are going to be if I purchase it. This is my max budget for a scope so I can't really get anything other than this unless there is a cheaper one that will work better for my needs

A: Hi Frank. Before we anser this conclusively, can you provide us with some details of your hunting experience. Specifically distance and weapons used. This information plays an important role in picking the right thermal scope.

From on

Q: Can you sight in and use an ATN Thor-HD 384 during day time?

A: Hi Phil. Thermal scopes can be used at any time. There is no night vision tube which can get damaged. ATN ThOR thermal riflescope is no exception.

From on

Q: Hello I just ordered the ATN THOR HD 384 1.25 5x19 my questions are; what is the largest caliber of rifles this scope can handle, and can the scope be upgraded at all, meaning can the lense be swapped from 19mm to larger and so forth?

A: Hi Doug. the scope can be used on a 308 without any issues. In terms of upgrades, all you can do is upgrade the firmware when ATN releases new versions.

From on

Q: Can this be set up on a crossbow? Have a crossbow Reticle?

A: Hi Travis. You can probably use this scope on a bow but there is no specialized reticle for a crossbow. You would have to figure it out with one of the available options. If you give us the rating of your bow we can confirm for you in regards to the mounting. You can see the available reticles here:

From on

Q: Can ATN THOR HD 384 1.25 5X19 be used on a .45-70 lever action action rifle? Can it handle the recoil forces?

A: Hi P Joseph. With .45-70 lever actions much depends on the weight of the gun. Heavier rifles tend to have a pretty mild kick. Either way, THOR-HD should do just fine. These scopes are built to handle .308 kick and are even tested on 50 caliber semi auto.

From on

Q: What type of atn thermal do i need to kill coyotes at 150 yards

A: Hello Mr Elder. I would suggest this model: ATN THOR-HD 384 2-8x25 Thermal Rifle Scope as the minimum. Please let us know if you would like to speak to one of our product experts over the phone to discuss your setup.

From on

Q: Can u deliver it to uk? And how much the price will be if u deliver it to uk? Do we need a licence for it in uk??

A: Hello Mr Raza. This thermal scope is not exportable outside of the USA.

From on

Q: Hi csn i use the ATN thermsl scopes on the crossman nitropiston ar177 air rifle or other nitropiston rifles??? Id like to do some night time varmint control. Also, i have a Hatsan Gladius .22 PCP and a Beretta CX2 bullpup PCP. Can I use the thermal sight on those??

A: Hi JD. You should be fine with all these guns. ATN ThOR-HD is rated for high caliber firearms.

From on

Q: Can this unit be used in daylight

A: Hi Jeff. Thank you for your question and Happy New Year! yes ATN THOR-HD 384 is a thermal riflescope and as such is not dependent on light sensitive night vision tubes. Thermal censors are not impacted by light conditions at all. All that matters is the temperature map. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

From on

Q: Besides the AA batteries can this be externally charged from any other source of power not requiring the AA's? For power longevity purposes.

A: Hi. Absolutely. ATN makes an external power supply for ThOR -HD thermal scopes. You can find it here:

From on

Q: Can the optical lenses be changed out on the ATN Thor HD scopes? If this is an option how would I go about purchasing just the lenses for my Thor unit? Thanks in advance for your input.

A: Hi Corey. ATN is not offering this as an option at this time. Thor scopes are fixed with the lenses they are sold with.

From on

Q: Where is the Thor HD thermold sight made .

A: Hi Charles These newer Thors are made in China. The original models where machined in the USA. As you can imagine going to China allowed for the more aggressive pricing ATN offers currently.

From on

Q: What are the specifications of the external power supply unit ? What is the power output , voltage , amps etc . How is it recharged ?

A: Hi PS. Are asking about the optional ATN external power supply or are you asking what type of power supply is needed to work with this night vision scope?

From on

Q: Can the ATN THOR HD 384 1.25-5x be used as a handheld monocular like the OTS? Price is comparable to the OTS 1.25-5x, so I figured I may as well buy the THOR and have the option to use it as a monocular or on my AR10.

A: Hi Josh. The ATN ThOR thermal scope can be used as a handheld thermal monocular but it is much heavier than the monocular due to the construction and the weapon mount. I am not sure it will be convenient to use it as such on regular basis.

From on

Q: I just purchased the thor HD 5-50×100 30hz. Is there anyway it can be upgraded to a 60hz ?

A: Hi Chris. Did you purchase this unit from us? Please clarify when you bought and from which store.
